Zámek Buchlovice

Castle · Czechia

Checked

An Italian Baroque château built by Domenico Martinelli around 1700, its Baroque garden and English park among the finest in the Czech Republic.

Jan Dětřich of Petřvald commissioned the château as a gift for his wife Agnes Eleonora, of the Venetian Colonna family, once the old fortress at nearby Buchlov Castle no longer suited a noble household. Domenico Martinelli, an architect from Lucca, drew the design, and the château was habitable within nine years, by 1707. The Berchtold family inherited the estate in 1800 and expanded the Italian garden into an English-style park in the first half of the 19th century, planting trees and shrubs gathered on their travels. Around 1900, under Count Leopold Berchtold, the château became a working seat of diplomacy rather than just a residence.

Bikes are banned inside the chateau park, lock up at the gate before walking the 19-hectare grounds.

What you see

Two linked buildings, the ceremonial Dolní zámek and the service Horní zámek, face each other across an oval courtyard, with a French formal garden giving way to an English landscape park around them.
