Guadix's cathedral was erected by papal bull in 1492 on the site of the city's former Great Mosque, itself built over an earlier Visigothic church. Built between the 16th and 18th centuries with repeated interruptions, it mixes Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical work; Diego de Siloé drew the plans in 1549 and the sandstone main façade was finished between 1754 and 1799.
Diego de Siloé's Renaissance plan of 1549 had barely started when a Morisco uprising broke out in 1568, and the building sat half-finished for more than a century; early seventeenth-century attempts to restart the work stalled again, and the final push came only between 1713 and 1799, from the architects Vicente Acero and Gaspar Cayón de la Vega. The bell tower rose in three separate stages of stone and brick, finished off with an octagonal lantern added in 1863 and a Sagrado Corazón sculpture in 1945. Inside, the Capilla Mayor is centred on a pink marble tabernacle by Domingo Lois Monteagudo, and five large paintings by Fernando Marín Chaves depict scenes from the life of the Virgin. A Neoclassical trascoro behind the choir is centred on a sculpture of the Virgen del Pilar.

The Baroque facade on the Plaza de la Catedral alternates concave and convex bays across three sculpted portals, one for each nave, cut into pale stone.
