The climbs that never turn back

A switchback is a gift. It breaks the rhythm, gives you something to aim at, and lets you stand up out of the saddle for four seconds. Some long climbs never hand you one.
Mount Lemmon bends its way forty-six kilometres up the flank of the Catalinas and turns back on itself exactly once. Kitt Peak curves for nineteen kilometres to its observatory and never does at all. It is a different principle from an Alpine pass: instead of stacking corners up a headwall, an American mountain road traverses, working along the side of the range and taking the long way because there is room to.
You climb for two hours facing the same direction.
The climbs, longest first
Mount Lemmon (Catalina Highway) 1 hairpin in 46.3 kmThe reason most riders come to Tucson: 29 miles from saguaro to pine at a metronomic 4 to 6%, built over 17 years by a rotating workforce of nearly 8,000 fed…

Madera Canyon 2 hairpins in 20.9 kmThe gentle one of Tucson's big climbs: a lumber road turned CCC-built canyon retreat, now the winter training ride the visiting professionals rank just behin…
Kitt Peak none in 19.8 kmThe observatory climb: a highway finished in 1967 to haul a four-metre telescope to a summit the Tohono O'odham hold sacred, gated open only from 9 to 4.
Sýkoř from Prudká none in 14.7 kmThe roof of the Tišnov country at 702 m, up the old 1920s road between Doubravník and Lomnice.- Coll de Femenia 2 hairpins in 11.9 kmThe north's gateway into the Tramuntana, and the first climb of the day on all three Mallorca 312 routes, an event that grew from 199 riders in 2010 to aroun…
Straight is not the same as gentle. Mount Lemmon gains 1,887 metres and Independence Pass tops out above 3,600. What a rider notices is the monotony: nothing to break the rhythm, no corner to stand up in, and on the Arizona climbs no shade either.
