Castillo de Villarejo de Salvanés

Castle · Madrid south

Checked

Only the keep survives from this castle, built by the Order of Santiago after Moorish raiders from Cuenca destroyed the nearby fortress of Alharilla around 1200. Its four-story tower groups turrets along the sides rather than the corners, an arrangement rare in Spanish military architecture. Restored and open inside, it later sheltered the guerrilla leader El Empecinado and anchors the town's 1974 historic-artistic ensemble.
