Mont Ventoux
Provence
The white cap that reads as snow from down in the Rhone valley is bare limestone, scoured clean of trees and scrub, and it keeps that look all year while real snow lies only from December to April. At 1,910 m the Giant of Provence stands clear of anything else its size, which is why the Tour de France keeps coming back to it and why 2009 gave the race its first mountain-top finish on the penultimate day.
