What it’s like to ride

Rekelberg is asphalt rather than cobbles, a narrow road running between Michelbeke in Brakel and Rozebeke in Zwalm. You drop into it off a descent, so you arrive carrying speed for the steepest and most open stretch near the bottom, where the gradient touches about 9%. It then eases and runs between houses, and after a left turn the road climbs on through greenery to a view at the top. Short, quiet and well surfaced, with almost no traffic, it gives the feel of the Flemish Ardennes without the hardest bergs. The Ronde van Vlaanderen used it four times, in 2004 and then from 2011 to 2013, when it fell between the Molenberg and the Berendries; it also appears in the Egmont Cycling Race and on the red loop of the recreational Ronde van Vlaanderenroute.

History

The Rekelberg takes a narrow asphalt road out of Michelbeke, in Brakel, toward Rozebeke in Zwalm, and it has been included in the Ronde van Vlaanderen four times: 2004, 2011, 2012 and 2013. In 2004 it came very early, the second of eighteen climbs, after the Grotenberge and before the Molenberg. It returned for the 256.3 km 2011 edition as the third of eighteen, ridden straight after the Nokereberg and before the Kaperij, and in 2012 and 2013, the last of its appearances, it sat between the Molenberg and the Berendries. The Egmont Cycling Race at Zottegem, a UCI 1.1 event since 2005, still climbs it among its Flemish Ardennes hills, and it carries the red loop of the signposted Ronde van Vlaanderenroute.
