What it’s like to ride

The Buikberg links the Heirweg (the N8 between Oudenaarde and Brakel) with the Haaghoek, the cobbled sector the Ronde van Vlaanderen uses, running over Muziekstraat and Buikberg itself. Almost all the work sits in one short ramp of around 10%. Past it the road flattens, so you either shift up or use the easier section to get your breath back. The surroundings are rural and rolling, and in clear weather the view from up here reaches Ghent, roughly 35 km away.

History

Buikberg is a farm lane in Sint-Kornelis-Horebeke in the Flemish Ardennes, running between the N8 Heerweg and the cobbles of the Haaghoek; the Flemish heritage inventory records it as a rural street with a winding course, lined with nothing but farmsteads and one older villa. Those farmsteads are old: the Buikberghoeve dates from the 18th century and was rebuilt to its present form around 1878, the semi-enclosed brick complex at Buikberg 2 belongs to the period 1786 to 1816, and the farm at Buikberg 14 goes back at least to the 18th century.
