Alter Hof began as a ducal city castle in the late 12th century, the first residence of the Wittelsbach dynasty that ruled Bavaria for over 700 years. From around 1255 it was the seat of Bavaria's dukes, and under Ludwig the Bavarian it briefly served as Germany's first fixed imperial residence, from 1314 to 1347. Rebuilt after wartime destruction, its courtyard is open to the public today.

The Alter Hof (Old Court) in the center of Munich is the former imperial residence of Louis IV, Holy Roman Emperor and consists of five wings: Burgstock, Zwingerstock, Lorenzistock, Pfisterstock and Brunnenstock. Like most of the old town, it was rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II.
