Haarlemmerpoort is the fifth gate on this site in Amsterdam's history, the first a wooden structure from around 1380 that moved west with each expansion of the city. The current gate, designed by Cornelis Alewijn and built 1838-1840, is neoclassical, with semi-circular bay windows and Corinthian columns supporting its open passage. It was officially renamed Willemspoort for King Willem II's 1840 ceremonial entry, but Amsterdammers kept calling it Haarlemmerpoort.
