Rondehoep

Nature reserve · Amsterdam

Checked

Rondehoep is a 1,266-hectare peat meadow polder reclaimed from swamp between 1100 and 1300, one of the largest open, undeveloped areas in the Randstad. The peat rivers Bullewijk, Waver, Oude Waver and Amstel ring it, and its ditches fan out from the centre like spokes of a wheel. A protected 165-hectare meadow-bird area sits in the middle, drawing waterfowl in winter and meadow birds in spring.
