The Heilig-Geist-Kirche stands on Werder's island, the third church built on this spot since Cistercian monks from Lehnin Abbey raised the first one around 1250. Friedrich August Stüler designed the current Neo-Gothic building, completed in 1858, and its tower is visible from well outside town. Theodor Fontane, seeing it from a distance, called it a small-town cathedral.
