Hotel Rankl

Food stop · Horská Kvilda · Czechia

Checked

A mountain hotel at 1,075 m in Horská Kvilda, the highest-elevation village in Czechia, run by two former racers, with a restaurant serving Czech food in traditional Šumava style.

The hotel stands on the foundations of Pollauf's inn, a stop on the historic Golden Trail trade route through Šumava first documented in 1680. It is also where Karel Klostermann's novel V ráji šumavském opens, and Rankl Sepp, the strongman hero of that book, is still remembered locally with a two-metre wooden statue. The inn operated until the 1950s, was nationalized and used as a school, then returned to private hands after 1989 and was rebuilt into today's hotel in 2004. The two sportsmen who run it still train on the region's cycling and ski trails.

Practical

The hotel rents bikes, e-bikes and cross-country skis, with route advice from the owners' own racing background.
