One of Moravia's most photographed castles, its Neo-Gothic towers and turrets became the fairytale backdrop for dozens of Czech films and the Italian series Fantaghiro. Rebuilt between 1895 and 1910 for the Teutonic Order's Grand Master, Archduke Eugen of Austria, it started life in 1317 as a hilltop fort.
The castle was first recorded in 1317 under the Buz of Bludovec family, and by the early 15th century it belonged to the Lords of Kunstat. George of Podebrady, later King of Bohemia, was born within its walls in 1420. The Teutonic Order bought the estate in 1696, and two centuries later Archduke Eugen of Austria, the Order's Grand Master, ordered the sweeping Neo-Gothic rebuild that gave the castle its current silhouette. Munich architect Georg von Hauberrisser drew up the plans between 1895 and 1910, adding running water and central heating behind the medieval-style stonework. During the Second World War the castle was seized by the Nazis, and Heinrich Himmler had it earmarked as a gift for Hitler. Its dramatic towers have since made it one of the most filmed castles in the country, standing in for the Italian fantasy series Fantaghiro and a string of Czech fairy tale films.
