Landmark · Mnetěš · Czechia
Checked
The Romanesque rotunda crowning Říp, the isolated hill where legend says Forefather Čech chose the land for his people. Dating to around 1039, it is one of Bohemia's oldest standing buildings and a national symbol, its round tower visible for miles across the plain.
Říp is a lone basalt cone rising abruptly from the Bohemian plain, and its silhouette, crowned by this round Romanesque tower, is visible for miles in every direction. Legend holds that Forefather Čech climbed the hill, surveyed the land below, and chose it as home for his Slavic tribe, a story first written down by the chronicler Kosmas in the early 12th century and later retold by Alois Jirásek. The rotunda itself is one of the oldest standing buildings in the Czech Republic: a chapel is thought to have stood here around 1039, when the relics of St. Adalbert were brought to Prague, and Duke Soběslav I rebuilt it in stone after 1126 to mark his victory at the Battle of Chlumec. It passed to Strahov Monastery in 1138 and became a popular pilgrimage site in the 17th and 18th centuries. Its current smooth-plastered look, with a south portal and large windows, dates from a purist restoration in 1869–1881. In 1868 a cornerstone for Prague's National Theatre was ceremonially lifted from the summit and carried down to the capital.
What you see
Říp's steep, tree-covered cone rises alone out of the flat Elbe lowlands, the rotunda's round tower and pale walls breaking the treeline at the summit, visible from the surrounding roads for miles before the climb even starts.
Practical
Open seasonally, roughly April to October with hours varying by month; by prior arrangement only in winter. A tourist chalet built in 1907 stands beside the rotunda, serving refreshments almost year-round.
