Checked

Its neo-Gothic turrets crown a sandstone cliff above the Hruboskalsko rock town, the toothy skyline that lines the Turnov–Jičín road as you climb into Bohemian Paradise. First recorded in 1353 as the fortress Skála, built by the Valdštejn (Wallenstein) family, it passed through the Jenštejn and Zajíc lords before the Smiřice family began converting it into a château from 1515, growing their estate to more than 50 villages. The Valdštejns reclaimed the property around 1630, but the romantic look you see today only dates to an 1859 rebuild in neo-Gothic style. In 1854 the château was the birthplace of Alois Lexa von Aehrenthal, who went on to serve as Austro-Hungarian foreign minister in the run-up to the First World War. Seized by the state in 1945 and run as a communist-era recreation home, it now operates as a hotel, though its courtyard and viewing tower remain open to visitors.
