Zřícenina hradu Cimburk

Landmark · Czechia

Checked

An extensive Gothic castle ruin crowning a ridge above the Koryčany reservoir, deep in the Chřiby forests. Bernard of Cimburk built it in 1327-1333; a volunteer group has been rescuing its walls and 23-meter tower since 1994.

Bernard of Cimburk built this hilltop stronghold between 1327 and 1333, its design echoing the French style fashionable under John of Luxembourg. A 23-meter tower of neatly coursed ashlar block still rises over the remains of a palace flanked by two corner turrets, with 16th-century bastions added later to counter Ottoman threats. Abandoned by the early 18th century, the ruin was picked apart for building stone until the civic association Polypeje began rescuing it in 1994, most recently rebuilding the castle's original 14th-century gate between 2021 and 2024. A marked path runs along the neck rampart under the guard tower to a viewpoint over the Chřiby hills.

What you see

A stone tower breaks the treeline on a wooded ridge, with the roofless walls of the palace and its two corner turrets below it and the Koryčany reservoir spread out beneath the hill.
