Zámek Cetechovice

Castle · Czechia

Checked

From the road you catch the four-wing baroque block through the trees, a rusticated south front under a steep mansard roof of beaver-tail tiles, but the gates stay shut: a private home, not a museum stop. It rose in 1731–38 on the footprint of a moated medieval fortress recorded here since 1481.

Local legend explains why this quiet estate once paid out charity every year: a mysterious baker threw a lump of dough at a village girl, and when she ran home in fright, pure gold spilled out of her apron. She fell ill and died soon after, leaving instructions that her gold be shared out annually among eighteen of the parish's poor. The real story is hardly less unusual: builder Josef Antonín Mayer von Mayerswald's own will, dated 28 April 1738, set up a substantial poor-relief foundation for Cetechovice that same year his new château was finished, and the folk tale is simply that bequest dressed up in gold and magic.
