Passo Campolongo

Pass · 1875 m · Dolomites

Checked

Passo Campolongo links Corvara in Val Badia with Arabba, the lowest of the four Sellaronda passes but no less demanding at up to 13 switchbacks. The Giro d'Italia first crossed it in 1949 and has returned 14 times since, with Gimondi, Fignon, Induráin, Nibali and Roglič all racing over its slopes. It also opens the Maratona dles Dolomites, the first climb riders face in that single-day race.

In the 1993 Giro's loop stage from Corvara back to Corvara, Campolongo was the last climb before the finish. Claudio Chiappucci crossed it together with Miguel Indurain in a small breakaway and won the sprint into town by a single second, though Indurain kept the overall lead by 1 minute 18 seconds. Its name is literally 'long field', for the plateau of high pasture the road crosses rather than a jagged Dolomite ridge. Above the pass, trails cross the Pralongià plateau, a stretch of alpine meadow between the Sella massif and the Fanis group.
