Passo San Pellegrino
Pass · 1918 m · Dolomites
Checked
The two summits flanking the road once faced each other across a front line: Austrians on Cima Uomo to the north, Italian trenches on Col Margherita to the south. Col Margherita's cable car now lifts visitors off the 1918 m saddle between Moena and Falcade for a panorama taking in the glaciated Marmolada, Civetta, Pelmo and the Pale di San Martino.
In winter the slopes around the pass become the Trevalli ski area; in summer the same rock draws climbers onto the routes of Cima Uomo above it. The approach from Moena averages a milder 6.4%, but a section past the four-kilometre mark pitches to 14%, catching out riders who paced themselves off the gentler opening kilometres. Below Col Margherita, the Austrian army's second defensive line in the Fango sector included heavy-artillery positions built with material salvaged from the fort at Someda. The Giro d'Italia has returned often since: Juan Manuel Garate won a stage finish here in 2006, and in 2022 it opened a run of three consecutive high passes, Pordoi and the Fedaia following it, on the stage that put Jai Hindley in the pink jersey on the Marmolada.
What you see
Col Margherita rises as an imposing rocky spur directly above the pass, its cable car lifting visitors to a panorama that takes in the glaciated Marmolada and the peaks of Civetta, Pelmo and the Pale di San Martino.
