't Juiste Verzet
Café · Kluisbergen · Flanders
Checked
A cycling café built into a farmhouse on the Oude Kwaremont, run for over two decades by Annie Vermeulen. Deliberately modest beside the climb's grander event tents, it doubles as a meeting point for supporters of every rider on race day.
The café occupies an old farm building at the foot of the climb, run from behind the bar by Annie Vermeulen. She named it 't Juiste Verzet, Flemish for finding the right gear, a nod to the cobbles running past the door, and keeps the regional Kwaremont blond on tap. On race day the meadow beside the café fills with supporters from well beyond Belgium: Americans, Dutch fans, even a retired Swiss professional cyclist, by Vermeulen's own account. She keeps the place deliberately plain next to the corporate hospitality tents that have sprung up further along the Oude Kwaremont, and likes to say the warmth comes as much from the people packed inside as from the old wood stove that heats the room.
What you see
Old racing jerseys cover the walls and a string of water bottles donated by former professional riders hangs from the ceiling above a vintage tap counter, all inside what was once the farm's cowshed.
Practical
Open to the public only on the first Sunday of each month and on Tour of Flanders race day; the rest of the year the building operates as a bed and breakfast.
