Café d'Oude Hoeve

Koers Cafe · Kwaremont · Flanders

Checked

An authentic mid-19th-century café on the Ronde van Vlaanderenstraat in Kwaremont, close to the top of the Oude Kwaremont climb on the Tour of Flanders course. One of the Kwaremont brewery's official Koerse Kaffees, run by Joëlle since 2015, with wooden beams, a fireplace and a terrace built for post-climb pints.

The café stands on a street built almost entirely around the Ronde van Vlaanderen: a short walk along the Ronde van Vlaanderenstraat brings you to Karel Van Wijnendaele's monument, the journalist who founded the race, past a mosaic set into the pavement of every Tour of Flanders winner. Before Joëlle took the venue over, it had already been part of local racing folklore for generations, and when she restored it in 2015 she kept the building's original character rather than modernizing it. It doubles as a stop for the local 2CV vintage-car club's touring routes through the Flemish Ardennes, as much a meeting point for old-timer drivers as for riders coming off the cobbles. On a sunny afternoon the terrace fills with a mix of both, working through a glass of Kwaremont beer, named for the climb just outside the door.
