chrám sv. Mořice

Church · Czechia

Checked

St. Maurice's Church is one of the largest Gothic buildings in Czechia and among its most significant Gothic monuments. The collegiate church has been a protected cultural monument since 1973.

The dedication to St. Maurice was unusual for Czech lands: Bishop Bruno of Schauenburg, who founded the collegiate chapter here shortly after 1262, had earlier served as provost at the church of St. Maurice in Magdeburg, and brought the name with him. The Hussite wars later damaged the building, and it was rebuilt and refurnished from 1517. A cast-iron plaque over the portal marks the last major reconstruction, in the 19th century under Archbishop Sommerau-Beckh, which restored the Gothic look after a fire tore through the church in 1836. The tower's double spiral staircase carries climbers up to the top for the view.

Practical

Open to visitors from May to September as part of the Otevřené brány open-gates project; the tower can be climbed as a lookout point.
