Checked

Muiderslot rose at the mouth of the Vecht around 1280-1285 under Floris V, Count of Holland, who used it to levy tolls on trade bound for Utrecht. Willem van Oranje captured it in 1577 during the Dutch Revolt. In the 17th century, poet and historian P.C. Hooft lived here as bailiff of Gooiland and hosted Vondel, Huygens and other writers each summer. The castle survives as a museum with rooms restored to that era.
