Fort Uitermeer stands on the east bank of the Vecht near Weesp, guarding the river, a sluice and the 's-Gravelandse Vaart since a bulwark first held this spot before 1589. Rebuilt as a bombproof tower fort, it later served both the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie and the Stelling van Amsterdam. Along with the rest of the Dutch Waterlinies, it carries UNESCO World Heritage status.
