Archenhold-Sternwarte, Germany's oldest and largest public observatory, grew out of a giant refracting telescope built for the 1896 Berlin Trade Fair in Treptower Park. Left in place after the exhibition, the 21-metre telescope, nicknamed the sky cannon, remains the longest movable refracting telescope in the world. In 1915, Albert Einstein gave his first public lecture on general relativity in its lecture hall.
