Checked

Torre Lavaredo, at 2536 m, sits on the ridge at the western end of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo group, between the Sasso di Landro and the Col di Mezzo. Its own prominence is just 9 metres, far lower than Cima Grande, Cima Ovest and Cima Piccola, the three summits that give the group its name.

The Giro delle Tre Cime, the nine-kilometre loop hikers walk around the three towers, follows this stretch of ridge on its way toward Forcella Col di Mezzo. Until 1919 the ridge marked the border between Italy and Austria-Hungary, and the wider massif was a front line from 1915 to 1917, with trenches and gun emplacements still traceable across the group. The neighboring Sasso di Landro, at 2,731 m, rises nearly 200 m above it on the same ridge. Like the group's three main summits, it is built from the pale, well-bedded Dolomia Principale limestone that also forms the Tofane and the Pelmo, laid down in the Triassic period.

Practical

The nearest cycling access is the toll road from Lake Misurina to Rifugio Auronzo, a 10 km climb averaging 7.5%; cyclists ride it free of the toll charged to cars, and the hut stands under a kilometre southeast of the summit.
