Trostburg stands on a hillside above Waidbruck in the Eisack Valley, first documented in 1173 as the seat of Cunrat de Trosperch. The Wolkenstein family held it as their ancestral seat for 600 years, and it was the birthplace of the poet-composer Oswald von Wolkenstein around 1377. Open to the public since 1977, the castle now houses the South Tyrolean Castle Museum, with 86 scale models of the region's castles.
