Zámek Jičín

The vast arcaded façade filling the south side of Valdštejnovo náměstí is the centerpiece of Jičín's baroque townscape and the reason to dismount here rather than ride past. It grew from three burgher houses joined by the Trčka family around 1487, then became a proper Renaissance residence with an arcaded courtyard under the Smiřický family between 1608 and 1616. After the estate was confiscated following the 1621 Battle of White Mountain, Albrecht von Wallenstein took it over and made Jičín the seat of his Duchy of Friedland, rebuilding the castle from 1625 to 1633 in North-Italian early-Baroque style under architects Andrea Spezza and Nicolò Sebregondi, demolishing six houses to make room and linking it to the Church of St James by a covered walkway. In June-July 1813 its halls hosted the talks between Prussia, Russia and Austria that forged the coalition which defeated Napoleon at Leipzig that same year. The Trauttmansdorff family later held the castle until selling it to the town in 1936, and it has housed the Regional Museum and Gallery ever since.
