Pařez
Czechia
A sandstone outcrop in the woods southwest of Pařezská Lhota carries the rock-cut chambers and tower stump of this vanished Gothic stronghold, worth the short detour off the road. First recorded in 1403 under its owner Jan z Pařezu, likely descended from a Petr z Pařezu already named here in 1372, the castle paired cellars carved straight into the rock with a half-timbered palace and a four-sided tower fitted with a drawbridge, all ringed by stone ramparts along the summit. It fell during the Hussite wars, probably in 1424: a stone bombard ball dug up on site points to a real siege, and by 1430 its next owner, Ctibor z Pařezu, held only a ruin. A 1972 excavation by archaeologists Jiří Waldhauser and V. Weber turned up 14th- and 15th-century pottery, iron chain links, and bone gaming discs, now held in the museums of Jičín and Hradec Králové. The rock core survives today as a protected monument, reached on foot from the village.
