Valdická brána anchors Jičín's main square, Valdštejnovo náměstí, and the climb up its 156 steps to a viewing platform at 32 metres, inside a tower now 52 metres tall, rewards a rider with a rooftop panorama over the town rooftops toward the Bohemian Paradise hills. The gate began as a fortification tower around 1480–1487, was rebuilt after town fires in 1568–1578, gained a third storey after another fire in 1589, and only reached its present height with a fourth storey added after 1769 and a reconstruction by builder Josef Opolzer in 1840. Albrecht von Wallenstein, the Imperial general who rebuilt Jičín as his ducal seat, planned to tear the gate down to enlarge the square, but died in 1634 before the plan went ahead, so the tower he wanted gone became the one now named for him. Over the centuries it also did duty as a customs post, a prison, a gunpowder store and a military archive before its restoration as today's public lookout tower with exhibition space.

Valdická brána je pozůstatkem městského opevnění. Stojí v centru města Jičína (Valdštejnovo náměstí čp. 102) a stala se jeho dominantou. Několikrát vyhořela. V šestnáctém století byla na místě původní brány postavena dvoupatrová hranolovitá budova s průjezdem. V sedmnáctém století byla zastřešena. Během osmnáctého století bylo dostavěno třetí a čtvrté patro s ochozem. V roce 1840 byla při opravě postavena vysoká jehlanová střecha. Tato podoba brány zůstala zachována do současnosti. Je vysoká 52 metrů, ochoz se nachází ve 32 metrech. Brána je přístupná veřejnosti jako rozhledna. Konají se zde výstavy či divadelní představení. Městské opevnění s Valdickou bránou bylo zapsáno jako kulturní památka 3. května 1958 do Ústředního seznamu nemovitých kulturních památek České republiky pod číslem 30932/6-1070.
