Open data

The places dataset behind waybook.cc/places.

Waybook’s place directory is a derivative database of OpenStreetMap (selection, coordinates, categories), enriched with openly licensed material from Wikipedia, Wikivoyage and Wikimedia Commons. As share-alike requires, the published dataset is available under the Open Database License (ODbL) 1.0.

Download the dataset (JSON): name, coordinates, category and canonical page URL for every published place. Regenerated daily. Attribution: “© OpenStreetMap contributors, © Waybook”.

Story texts on place pages are adaptations of Wikipedia/Wikivoyage material and are marked CC BY-SA 4.0 per page; photos are Wikimedia Commons, credited per image with their own licences. Those are not part of the ODbL dump.

Elevation data

The hillshaded relief and contour lines on the map are rendered in the browser from the Terrain Tiles open elevation dataset (Tilezen/Mapzen terrarium tiles, AWS Open Data). Waybook stores no elevation data. The dataset is a composite of national and global sources, each requiring its own credit:

The basemap is OpenFreeMap (OpenMapTiles schema), restyled by Waybook. Map pin glyphs are Maki, CC0.
