Checked
Clifton Observatory started as a windmill in 1766, later ground snuff, then burned out after a gale set its sails alight in 1777. Artist William West converted the ruin into an observatory by 1842, installing a camera obscura that still projects live images of the Avon Gorge, one of only three working examples in the UK.
