Clifton Suspension Bridge
Bristol
Clifton Suspension Bridge spans the Avon Gorge over 300 feet above the river, designed by a 24-year-old Isambard Kingdom Brunel after he won an 1831 competition. Funds ran out after his death in 1859 with only the two masonry towers built; engineers William Barlow and John Hawkshaw finished it to his design in 1864. Brunel called it "my first child, my darling."
