Bristol Cathedral began as an Augustinian abbey founded around 1140 by Robert Fitzharding, consecrated in 1148. Henry VIII made it a cathedral in 1542 after dissolving the abbey, and its nave stood unfinished for three centuries until completed in Gothic Revival style in 1877. The medieval choir, rebuilt around 1306, is a rare English hall church, with aisles built to the same height as the choir.
