Leigh Woods
Bristol
Leigh Woods covers about two square kilometres of ancient woodland on the south-west side of the Avon Gorge, opposite Clifton Suspension Bridge, the largest ancient woodland in the city. The Iron Age hillfort Stokeleigh Camp, occupied from around the third century BC, sits on the edge of Nightingale Valley, alongside derelict 18th- and 19th-century limestone and celestine quarries. George Alfred Wills gave 80 acres to the National Trust in 1909.
