Kavčí hory

Peak · 266 m · Czechia

Checked

Riders on the Vltava's right-bank path through Podolí pass right beneath this outcrop's most striking feature: a sheer quarried cliff of Paleozoic limestone, protected today as the Podolský profil nature monument for the trilobites, corals, brachiopods and the oldest fish fossils found in the Czech Republic exposed in its rock. The plateau above, a 266 m western spur of Prague's Pankrác terrace, takes its name from a legend that the mythical prince Bivoj once caught a wild boar here, when the hill was still known as "Kančí hory" (Boar Hills). Since the 1960s the summit has been dominated by Czech Television's headquarters, built in stages between 1962 and 1979 to a design by architect František Šmolík; its curved main studio building is nicknamed the "Rohlík" after the crescent-shaped bread roll it resembles. From the rocky summit itself, the view opens across all of inner Prague, over the river to Prague Castle.
