The Vltava's riverside cycle path passes directly below these limestone cliffs, and the two-metre wooden viewing platform crowning them, designed by architect and actor David Vávra, is a quick detour for a view over the river valley to Prague Castle, Vyšehrad, and the ruined Dívčí hrady. The rock itself is a rare cross-section of the Barrandian: Silurian and Devonian limestone so fossil-rich with trilobites and cephalopods that its Ludlow–Přídolí stage boundary was adopted as an international geological stratotype at the 1984 Moscow Geological Congress. Quarrying here ran from at least the mid-18th century until 1928, producing the hydraulic lime used to build Prague's 19th-century Vltava embankments. Declared a nature monument on 29 April 1968, the 9.08-hectare reserve now pairs the bare cliff and old quarry with the Dobeška forest planted in 1917 on what had been barren rock, and still holds steppe relics like feather grass and nesting kestrels.

Branické skály jsou přírodní památka v Praze-Braníku, která byla vyhlášena 29. dubna 1968. Branické skály tvoří západní stráň vrchu Dobeška s bývalým lomem na pravém břehu řeky Vltavy v Braníku, poblíž zastávky MHD Přístaviště. Jsou ohraničeny na východě ulicí Na Dobešce, na západě ulicí Modřanskou, na severu přibližně ulicemi Vysoká cesta, Nad lomem a na jihu ulicí Stará cesta, která je odděluje od Školního vrchu. Chráněné území zaujímá rozlohu 9,1 hektaru v nadmořské výšce mezi 190 a 264 metry, zahrnuje tzv. školní vrch a samotné Branické skály s lesoparkem Dobeška. Chráněné území je ve správě Magistrátu hlavního města Prahy.
