Demínka

Restaurant · Praha 2 · Czechia

Checked

On the corner of Škrétova and Anglická streets in Vinohrady, this is one of Prague's longest continuously running restaurants, still fitted out with the Art Nouveau stucco ceilings that mark it as a heritage interior. Josef Demín, a former head waiter at Prague's main railway station, opened it as a café in 1886 on the site of the wooden Nové české divadlo (New Czech Theatre), which had stood there until the previous year; it gradually grew into the restaurant it is today. It is remembered as one of the places present at the founding of AC Sparta Prague, and after the First World War it drew the Čapek brothers, playwright František Langer, and actors from the nearby Vinohrady Theatre. Under communism it kept sheltering artists and, later, Charter 77 dissidents, earning it the nickname "grandmother of Prague's restaurants." It now operates as part of the Pilsner Urquell Original Restaurant chain, serving traditional Czech cooking in its First-Republic-era rooms.
