Bristol Castle
Bristol
Bristol Castle stood here from the 11th century, first a motte-and-bailey castle recorded in 1088, then rebuilt in stone with a keep and new walls in the 12th century. It was demolished in 1656, and the site became Castle Park in the early 1970s after wartime bombing had levelled the surrounding streets. Buried remains of the moat and barbican survive underground as a scheduled monument.
