palác Žofín
Praha · Czechia
Riders on Prague's riverside cycle path can't miss this ornate Neo-Renaissance hall on Slovanský ostrov, its balconied facade rising right at the water's edge. It was built in 1835-37 as a ballroom and concert hall for the island's owner, miller Václav Novotný, then named Žofín after Archduchess Sophie, mother of Emperor Franz Joseph I. In 1848 it hosted the Prague Slavic Congress, the event that later gave the whole island its own new name, Slovanský ostrov (Slavonic Island), while the building kept the name Žofín. The city bought the island in 1884 and rebuilt the hall into its current richly decorated form over the following two years. Its stages have hosted Antonín Dvořák's first solo concert in 1878, the first complete performance of Smetana's Má vlast in 1882, and appearances by Liszt, Berlioz, Tchaikovsky and Wagner. It remains Prague's grand venue for balls, concerts and exhibitions today.
