One of the few genuinely Gothic facades left on Old Town Square, its steep gables and corner turret still stand out from the Baroque and Rococo fronts around it. Built around 1310-1320 for a wealthy burgher family, it is traditionally said to have housed Eliška Přemyslovna, wife of John of Luxembourg, and by legend to be the birthplace of her son, the future Holy Roman Emperor Charles IV, in 1316. For over two centuries a Baroque stucco skin hid the medieval structure completely, until a 1975-1988 restoration stripped it away, uncovering original tracery windows, a painted chapel, and the carved stone bell relief that gives the house its name. It now houses a branch of the Prague City Gallery (GHMP), staging contemporary art exhibitions inside its restored Gothic halls.
