Vojenský historický ústav Praha is the Czech Ministry of Defence's military history museum and research institute. Its major branches include Armádní muzeum Žižkov, Letecké muzeum Kbely, and Vojenské technické muzeum Lešany.
The institute's core mandate is preservation: gathering the written and physical record of Czech and Czechoslovak military history, then cataloguing, researching, and opening it to the public. That mission reaches visitors mainly through its museums and exhibition halls, but it also runs a library, publishes books and journals, and holds academic conferences and seminars. Its historians double as a resource for the armed forces, supplying historical background to military units and institutions on request. Beyond its three main branches, it maintains further external exhibition spaces around the country.
A short climb up Vítkov hill behind the museum leads to the giant Žižka statue and one of Prague's best panoramic viewpoints.
