The name comes from Mazon's childhood in Las Bocas, a lake and beach town in Sonora, Mexico she remembers every time she says it out loud. Born in Tucson and raised across the border, she describes her own identity as split down the middle: Sonora on one side of her chef coat, Arizona on the other. She found cooking working a line at Papagayo's, built a catering business afterward, and opened BOCA on Fourth Avenue in 2010. The kitchen changes its lineup every Wednesday with a new chef's special that regulars watch for. Some of what lands in the daily salsas is grown in a garden behind the restaurant. Mazon has since gone on to open more restaurants around Tucson, carrying the same colorful, from-scratch approach she started with at BOCA.
