Cycling stops in Tucson & the Sky Islands

Tucson's reputation rests on one road. The Catalina Highway leaves the eastern edge of town at saguaro height and climbs for about forty kilometres to Ski Valley, gaining the better part of 1,800 metres and passing out of the Sonoran Desert into pine forest on the way, a change of vegetation that would otherwise take a drive to Canada. Riders stack up at Le Buzz at the bottom before the climb and at the Cookie Cabin in Summerhaven after it, which is as close as American road cycling gets to a liturgy.

The rest of the riding fans out from there: Gates Pass and the Saguaro West loop to the desert museum, the long straight run south past the Titan silo to Madera Canyon, Kitt Peak's observatory road out on the Tohono O'odham Nation, and the mission of San Xavier del Bac standing white against the desert on the way home. Two hours east, Mount Graham's Swift Trail climbs 34 km into the Pinaleños, the biggest of the sky islands and the region's longest sustained climb. It stays rideable through the winter, which is why the training camps come.

Mission Garden

Tucson & the Sky Islands

Mission Garden is a walled, four-acre living agricultural museum at the foot of Sentinel Peak, on the site of the Tohono O'odham village of Cuk Ṣon and Tucson's original Mission San Agustín. What makes it worth stopping for is the span of farming it traces: heirloom fruit trees and heritage crops reflecting Spanish, Mexican, Chinese, and Indigenous foodways grown here for over 4,000 years. It's open Wednesday through Sunday, mornings only, with free admission and a suggested $5 donation.

More than a dozen themed plots line the walled grounds, each tracing a different chapter of who farmed this valley: Hohokam, O'odham before and after European contact, Spanish colonial fields, Chinese immigrant crops, Yoeme, and a garden of crops carried through the Americas by African communities. The land itself holds that history: archaeological digging here between 2001 and 2008 turned up evidence of the Spanish-era mission that once stood on the site, before the first heritage trees went into the ground. For much of the twentieth century the same ground served as a landfill, its mission ruins bulldozed over, until a 1999 tax measure funded the site's recovery. The first 120 heritage fruit trees were planted in 2012, and the garden was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2026.
