Cycling stops in Tucson & the Sky Islands

26 places · 5 routes · Arizona, United States

Tucson's reputation rests on one road. The Catalina Highway leaves the eastern edge of town at saguaro height and climbs for about forty kilometres to Ski Valley, gaining the better part of 1,800 metres and passing out of the Sonoran Desert into pine forest on the way, a change of vegetation that would otherwise take a drive to Canada. Riders stack up at Le Buzz at the bottom before the climb and at the Cookie Cabin in Summerhaven after it, which is as close as American road cycling gets to a liturgy.

The rest of the riding fans out from there: Gates Pass and the Saguaro West loop to the desert museum, the long straight run south past the Titan silo to Madera Canyon, Kitt Peak's observatory road out on the Tohono O'odham Nation, and the mission of San Xavier del Bac standing white against the desert on the way home. Two hours east, Mount Graham's Swift Trail climbs 34 km into the Pinaleños, the biggest of the sky islands and the region's longest sustained climb. It stays rideable through the winter, which is why the training camps come.

Madera Canyon

Tucson & the Sky Islands

Canyon in the Santa Rita Mountains, 25 miles southeast of Tucson, with hiking trails, picnic areas, and campsites. Over 250 bird species have been recorded here, making it a premier birdwatching spot along migration routes.

The canyon wasn't always called Madera Canyon: it was first known as White House Canyon, after a white adobe house a sheepherder named Walden built here in the late 1870s or early 1880s, home to the Morales family from 1911 to 1940. The name changed sometime in the early 1900s, though some locals still use the old one. Prospectors filled the Santa Rita Mountains in the same period, and more than a dozen mines worked this one canyon alone. Ben Daniels, once a marshal in Dodge City and Tombstone, built a home here and later served as Pima County sheriff. Madera Canyon and the Santa Ritas around it became part of the new National Forest System in 1905. Only a single wall fragment of the old White House was still standing when archaeologists surveyed the site in 2002.

What you'll see

The canyon climbs through four distinct life zones in just a few miles, desert scrub near the mouth giving way to oak, then pine, then aspen and fir stands near the high ridge.

Worth knowing

Madera Canyon is rated the third-best birding destination in the United States, and the elegant trogon, a species barely found anywhere else in the country, is one of its signature sightings.
