What it’s like to ride
The road out of Sant Esteve d'en Bas gives you a kilometre of warm-up at about 3.5%, crosses the Fluvià and runs at 6 to 7% through the fields around Joanetes before the climbing starts in earnest. From roughly km 3 the gradient sits up: km 4 touches 10%, and km 7 is the hardest kilometre of the whole ascent at almost 11%, with ramps of 14 to 15% as the road works into dense woodland. The tarmac is good and there is almost no traffic, because the cars take the C-37 through the Bracons tunnel underneath you. The last few hundred metres ease back to around 7% and put you on the 1,132 m pass, on the boundary between the Garrotxa and Osona, where a car park is usually full of walkers setting off for Puigsacalm and a four metre sculpture of a bicycle and a mountain stands in iron and stainless steel. There is nothing to buy up there, so fill your bottles in the valley.
History
The Volta a Catalunya crossed Bracons for the last time in 1990, taking this, the steeper flank, on a stage to Manlleu. The pass road went quiet after 3 April 2009, when the Torelló to Vall d'en Bas section of the C-37 opened and its 4,556 m Bracons tunnel took the through traffic under the col. What kept riders coming is the Terra de Remences cyclosportive, run out of Sant Esteve d'en Bas at the foot of this side since the late 1990s and into its 27th edition in 2024, which sends its field over the climb every May. In 2024 the organising Club Ciclista Bas put a four metre iron and stainless steel monument near the summit, made by the Bas blacksmith Narcís Salgueda to a design by Can Make of Olot, in tribute to the event's volunteers and to co-founder Toni Fité, who died in May 2022.
