Federal Café
Café · Girona
Checked
An Australian-style brunch café on Carrer de la Força, the old-town lane climbing to Girona's cathedral. It belongs to the Spanish Federal group, named after a village in New South Wales, and pairs specialty coffee with an all-day kitchen running from brunch plates to burgers. Retired WorldTour pro Rory Sutherland is a part-owner, which keeps it firmly on the Girona cycling circuit. There is inside bike parking, and the kitchen stays open late.
Rory Sutherland settled in Girona while riding for Movistar and opened this café in November 2016 with his wife and partners, after nearly a year converting an old stone building near the cathedral. The spark was a Barcelona Federal run by two Australians, part of the group that brought Antipodean brunch culture and specialty coffee to Spain. Compared with Girona's more deliberately cycling-branded cafés, Federal reads as a regular modern café with natural light and exposed stone that happens to sit in the middle of European cycling's expat capital.
Practical
Open from breakfast through the evening, later than most of Girona's cycling cafés. Indoor seating under stone walls and big windows, with inside bike parking. Cycling is not permitted on Carrer de la Força itself, so expect to walk the bike the last stretch.
