Mooma is a cidery and restaurant on a farmhouse amid apple orchards outside Palau-sator, home to Catalonia's first cider maker. The kitchen builds a Mediterranean menu around the apple, pairing pork and cod dishes with their own cider and four monovarietal apple juices, and a guided tour explains the pressing process from orchard to bottle. The terrace looks over the orchards, open Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 to 1:00 and Sunday until 17:00, a lunch stop for riders on the quiet Empordà lanes.

The name fuses Montgrí, the limestone massif that rises behind the orchards, with poma, Catalan for apple. The Frigola family has grown apples on this farm, Mas Saulot, for three generations, and it was here, around 2013, that they started experimenting with cider after noticing nobody in Catalonia was making it, drawing partly on Basque cider-making before settling on their own style. The first commercial batch went on sale in 2016, with tastings and orchard visits; a tapas menu followed in 2017 and a full kitchen from 2018. The farm now produces around four million kilograms of apples and forty to fifty thousand litres of cider a year.

Practical

Guided orchard visits let riders pick apples themselves, alongside cellar tastings on the terrace; book ahead through Mooma's website.
