What it’s like to ride

The road out of Amer narrows almost at once and hits its steepest pitch inside the first few hundred metres, so the opening decides how the rest of the day goes: 8.3 km averaging about 7.3%, with ramps near 11% and a steepest kilometre close to 10%, and it does not level off once. The surface is smooth asphalt all the way up, the woods are chestnut, oak and holm oak, and the valley keeps opening behind you into a long view back over Amer. Around five kilometres up, the Font de la Teula sits on the left of the road if you need water. The top at roughly 815 m is the hamlet of Sant Martí Sacalm: a church, a handful of houses and the Susqueda town hall on a broad upland plain, with the cliff of El Far and its sanctuary standing over the far side and the Pyrenees behind it on a clear day. There is a bar up there, a basic one, and riders report finding it shut.

History

Amer's cycling club runs the Marxa Cicloturista Amer-Sant Martí Sacalm each spring, and this ascent is its finish: the long route covers 139 km and 2,800 m of climbing through the Guilleries and Collsacabra before the last 8 km up here, while the 131 km short route stops down in Amer and skips it. The tenth edition was held on 27 March 2022, after two years lost to the pandemic. The village the road ends at is the seat of the municipality of Susqueda, a role it took when the dam on the Ter was completed in the late 1960s and the reservoir submerged the old village of Susqueda, which is why a town hall sits on a plateau at 815 m among six houses and a church of Romanesque origin rebuilt in the 17th century.
