Oniria Café is a small specialty coffee shop near Girona's Plaça de la Independència, opened in 2021 by Nora Salvat and Jannik Schäfer. The pair rotate guest roasters from across Europe and serve vegan, sugar-free cakes and pastries handmade by ex-professional cyclist Sam Mundy. Seating is tight inside, so regulars spill onto the outdoor tables, where cycling talk over espresso is a fixture, and Jannik also runs coffee and latte-art classes for anyone who wants to linger.
The name comes from oneiric, the state between waking and dreaming, which Nora Salvat and Jannik Schäfer took as the idea for a place built around treating coffee as a bridge between people rather than just a drink. The two met at an opening party for the Girona cycling outfit Eat Sleep Cycle, and when Jannik came back to the city a year later he ran into Nora on one of the old town's stone bridges. They started a few doors down in a friend's shop, rent-free, before moving into the current space. Jannik still keeps track of the regulars, reckoning he knows something personal about nine in ten of the people who come back often.
